Different Cockapoo Sizes & What To Expect As They Grow! (2024)

What Age Are Cockapoos Fully Grown?

Apartment living can sometimes mean you have to live a life without man’s best friend. Most dogs are too large. The king of all designer dogs, the Cockapoo, is an apartment dweller’s best friend.

Crossed between a Poodle and an American Cocker Spaniel, the Cockapoo has been around since the mid-century.

During the decades that followed, the Cockapoo has become a beloved pet by both apartment dwellers and those with their own home for years.

What makes the Cockapoo so versatile that allows it to be great for both apartments and homes? The secret rests with the Poodle.

American Cocker Spaniels are already slightly smaller dogs. However, it’s the Poodle where the variation in size truly comes into play.

To understand how large your Cockapoo is going to become, it’s important to know what kind of Poodle was used in the crossing.

At what age are Cockapoos fully grown? How big will they get? Depending on what Poodle is used in the mix, smaller Cockapoos will reach their full-size around the six-month mark. For larger Poodles used in breeding, the Cockapoos that are larger will take anywhere from 9 months to 12 months to fully grow. They can range anywhere from 10 inches to 18 inches at the shoulder.

As always, it depends, right?  Parents give you a good idea but maybe your pup will be bigger or smaller.

We can give you a good range though and give you some owners’ feedback on how big their dogs are! That will go a long way with judging how big your Cockapoo will get!

How Big Will A Cockapoo Get?

Determining how big a Cockapoo will become depends on the Poodle that is used in the breeding.

If the Cockapoo comes from multigenerational breeding between Cockapoos, then you can likely expect the puppy to be about the same height as its parents.

There’s less variation with multigenerational Cockapoos. For Cockapoos that come from an F1 or F2 line, however, their size can vary.

A Cockapoo that comes from a Toy or Teacup Poodle can usually get up to 10 inches in height. They’ll also weigh around 6 pounds.

This is a great choice for those who live in apartments or for those who want a smaller dog that is easier to handle. You don’t have to worry about them pulling you on a leash.

Because they’re smaller and have less to grow, the Teacup Cockapoo will reach their full growth faster than other sizes. They’ll likely reach full growth by around six months.

  • Toy / Teacup Cockapoo:  9-10 inches at the shoulder – 12ish pounds
  • Miniature Cockapoo:  11-14 inches at the shoulder – 12-18 pounds
  • Standard Cockapoo:  15-18 inches at the shoulder – 19-20 pounds or so

A Toy or Teacup Poodle can also create a Toy Cockapoo.

This is a puppy that will eventually grow around 9 to 10 inches in height but will have a heavier weight than the Teacup Cockapoo at 12 pounds.

This is still a great choice for those who live in an apartment because they’re still quite tiny. For homeowners, the Toy Cockapoo is still quite manageable on the leash, too.

When a Miniature Poodle is used in the mix, you might receive a Miniature Cockapoo.

This is a larger breed that can stand anywhere from 11 inches in height to 14 inches. They can also weigh around 13 to 18 pounds.

The Miniature Cockapoo is still a good choice for apartment dwellers if they don’t mind having a slightly larger dog in their residence.

They won’t take up too much space or swat items off of the table. They can pull a bit more on their leash, but the weight isn’t too difficult to fight against.

Depending on how large the Miniature Cockapoo becomes, it may take anywhere from six to nine months for the Cockapoo to fully grow.

Finally, when a Standard Poodle is added into the crossing, you’ll receive a Standard or Maxi Cockapoo. This is the largest the breed can become at a height of 15 to 18 inches at the shoulder.

Their weight can get up to 19 pounds. Apartment dwellers might find this size a bit more difficult to have in their apartment, especially if their apartment is small.

Homeowners with a sizable yard are best suited for the Standard Cockapoo so they have room to stretch their long legs.

They can also pull against the leash with more weight (be sure that you’re using the right leash and collar), so it might be advisable to leave walking the dog to older children and adults.

Because they’re larger, it takes time for their skeleton and muscles to fully form.

Standard or Maxi Cockapoos can expect to take anywhere from nine months to a full year for growth to finish.

By that point, they’ll spend the rest of their years building muscle or fat depending on how active they are.

Although this information is certainly helpful, it can still be tough to decide which one is right for you.

The Cockapoo Handbook is chock full of more information on these delightful dogs and is truly a must-have for prospective or new Cockapoo owners.

How Long Is A Cockapoo A Puppy?

Cockapoos are considered to be puppies while they grow and develop. They’ll eventually lose their puppy coat and start to form adult features.

Their personalities will also change a little bit, and they’ll be tolerate being left alone for longer periods.

They’ll become more independent and perhaps even stubborn at times when they really don’t want to do something.

Toy and Teacup Cockapoos, because they reach their growth first, typically stop being puppies physically at around nine months.

However, their emotional and mental state may still be a puppy until a year has passed.

For Miniature and Maxi Cockapoos, they’ll be a puppy physically a lot longer. They don’t reach physical maturity until they’re 9 or 12 months old.

For the Maxi Cockapoo, they might not even be finished growing until 14 months old. Their emotional and mental maturity will likely develop by this point, too.

They’ll be less dependent on you and will have formed their adult behavior already.

Puppyhood can definitely be a rewarding, enjoyable experience, but there will likely be moments when your patience is put to the test.

Having a good variety of toys on hand to redirect a rambunctious pup can be a real sanity saver!

Do Cockapoos Experience Growth Spurts?

All dogs have growth spurts but some are more visible than others. Toy and Teacup Cockapoos, for example, are already quite small.

Their growth spurt will occur but it’s significantly less noticeable than larger dogs because they’re not growing all that much.

You’ll likely find that the first three months of their life will see the quickest changes in terms of growth.

As for Miniature and Maxi Cockapoos, their growth spurt is a lot more noticeable. Around the fourth and sixth-month mark, they’ll grow quite quickly.

Their coat may also start to shed out in favor of their adult coat. This can make them look larger than they actually are.

Quick and easy grooming (a high-quality slicker brush is ideal) can cut down the excess hair and give you an accurate view of just how large your dog has grown.

Once they have reached their full growth, their growth doesn’t necessarily stop there. Instead of growing upwards, however, they’ll start widening out.

As your Cockapoo develops more muscle, their muscles will start to grow. This might add a bit of height or it may simply make them look larger or slimmer.

The same goes for fat.

Unless you don’t exercise your dog regularly (find out how much exercise Cockapoos need in this article), they can start to become heavier. This can make them look larger than they should be.

What is a Maxi Cockapoo?

For those who are interested in buying Maxi Cockapoo, it’s best to know more about them.

The Maxi or Standard Cockapoo comes from a cross between a Standard Poodle and an American Cocker Spaniel.

In the event of a multigenerational Cockapoo, it comes from a long line of Standard Cockapoos.

These dogs typically have the Poodle as the mother and so usually resemble the mother more so than the father.

It’s not uncommon for a Maxi Cockapoo to have tight and curly hair like a Poodle. This hair can become matted if it isn’t brushed or groomed on occasion.

In cases where your Cockapoo plays a lot outside and gets dirty, then they might need to be brushed and bathed more often.

In terms of personality and temperament, the Maxi Cockapoo is similar to its smaller versions.

If anything, they might seem like they’re more active because they have more weight to pull around.

Yet more often than not, your Maxi Cockapoo will have around the same energy level as its smaller counterparts. They might just need longer naps between playtimes.

Due to its larger size, the Maxi Cockapoo isn’t always the greatest choice for an apartment unless you don’t mind having a larger dog in a smaller space.

It’s hardly the biggest dog out there thanks to the smaller stature of the American Cocker Spaniel limiting the size from the Standard Poodle.

With proper training, they’re happy anywhere.

What Are Owners Saying?

Cockapoos are gentle and quiet. He’s more kinky haired than curly. He’s 7. They don’t need a lot of exercise and are easily excitable, but quiet. Very cuddly and eager to please. He was 20 lbs at his heaviest

My cockapoo is about 20 lbs while the mini Goldendoodle was 30 lbs.

I have a cockapoo and she stopped growing in height by 8 months. She’s 10 months now and is now filling out a bit.
