After all, you want something that will give you the best results that won’t hurt your pup in any way.

Here are a couple of things that you should think about when buying the best brush for your Goldendoodle.

Brush Type

There are a few different kinds of brushes on the market for Goldendoodles. Here are the main ones to consider:

Bristle Brushes 

These can look a little different depending on the amount of space in between the bristles and how long they are.

If your dog has a longer coat then they will need a brush that has widely spaced bristles that are long.

On the other hand, bristles that are shorter and closer together are good for dogs that have short coats.

If, for instance, your golden doodle has a curlier coat then they could just need a pin brush for when you are grooming them and a slicker brush following a brush.

If the coat is wavy or fleecy then a bristle brush will be more appropriate. They are also a good choice for Goldendoodle puppies.

The best bristles are a mixture between nylon and boar bristles though – it’s best to avoid completely nylon bristles because these can break your dog’s hair.

A Goldendoodle’s Coat

Aside from the dashing cream and golden colors, a Goldendoodle’s coat can be curly, wavy, or straight – varying from dog to dog. Because their coats can range in texture, one Goldendoodles grooming needs may differ from another. Luckily, there is an expanse of brushes to deal with each coat type (but we’ll get to those momentarily).

No matter the texture of their coat, Goldendoodles are low-shedders and thus considered hypoallergenic. This can make grooming a little less cumbersome, as you won’t be dealing with the mountains of shedding hair that other breeds may produce.

Though hypoallergenic, Goldendoodles do have a double coat that easily traps natural debris such as dust, dirt, and twigs (if they roll around in the yard). Because of their dense and usually curly mane, they need to be groomed weekly, if possible. 

How to Groom a Goldendoodle Effectively 

For those new to grooming (or for first-time Doodle owners), tackling a Goldendoodle’s wiry coat may seem daunting. But not to worry, in this section, we’ll be going over a few grooming tips to help you along. 

Bathing Before Brushing

If your Goldendoodle is especially dirty, you’ll need to give them a bath. Shampoo the coat and rinse thoroughly to remove dirt. Be sure to finish the bath with some kind of conditioner to prevent additional knots and soften the existing mats. 

Once your dog is dry, you can begin brushing out any tangles and remaining debris. 

Brushing the Body 

• Before you begin, it’s a good idea to run your fingers through the coat in order to pinpoint tangles. 
• Gently brush through any mats with a Slicker or Wire Pin Brush in the direction of the hair growth. 
• Once you’ve removed any debris and tangles, finish up with a Bristle Brush smooth-over to leave the cost looking silky. 

Tending to the Face and Head

• Because of the sensitivities of the face, only groom the larger portions with a brush (and leave the more intimate areas to smaller combs). Here’s our favorite comb.
• The top and back of the head and neck can be groomed with a brush. Be sure to go slow, be comforting to your dog, and carefully remove all tangles. 
• Avoid the eye areas. If your dog flinches, the pins or bristles of the brush may accidentally harm them. 

Removing Debris and Knots 

• If you can’t get a knot to budge, don’t pull, as you risk damaging your Goldendoodle’s skin. Instead, use cutters to remove it. 
• Carefully handpick small twigs, burrs, and other natural debris from the coat. Pulling these with a brush would be extremely painful for your dog and may result in ripped fur. 
• Though they shed little, be sure to collect and remove dead fur.

How Many Times a Week Should You Brush Your Goldendoodle?

If your Goldendoodle has a curly coat, then ideally they should be brushed around twice a week.

If they tend to go outdoors a lot on walks or for play time or if their coat is quite long, then they should be brushed three times a week or more.

You will also need to ensure that you brush your pup when they come home if they have been caught in the rain or if they’ve been swimming. This helps to avoid the fur matting.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Goldendoodle?

You need to be careful with bathing Goldendoodles.

It’s a bad idea to bathe them too much because this can cause problems for the skin, but on the other hand if the coat isn’t maintained properly it can tangle and become quite uncomfortable.

You may also have a very smelly dog on your hands!

Ideally, you should be bathing your dog at least once every four to six weeks.

How Do You Groom a Goldendoodle? 

So you’ve got your brushes ready, it’s now time to groom your pup! There are a few things that you should keep in mind when grooming a Goldendoodle though.

First of all, if you come across any tangles or matting, then don’t tug at the fur.

You should stop trying to brush the fur straight away because a dog’s skin can be quite sensitive, and tugging can cause your pup to get injured and it can hurt them. 

This is when having a dematting tool, like the one I use on my Doodle, can really be helpful. It cuts through mats easily without pulling out large chunks of fur.

Following the use of a dematting comb, gently run your fingers through the coat to feel for any more tangles.

When you have finished combing the dog’s fur with your fingers, you will then need to grab your slicker brush to gently smooth over the coat.

When brushing, you should be especially careful around the feet, face, the armpits, and any private areas.

You can use some shears to remove any hair from the dog’s eyes, and you can trim the hair elsewhere. 

If you’re grooming a Goldendoodle puppy or a young dog, then it may be best to use a leash and a collar when you first starting grooming them.

A pup may get over-excited and move around a lot.

If they do behave for the grooming, you should make sure that you regularly reward them with their favorite treats (these all-natural training treats are a favorite of dogs everywhere).
